The campaign will not only be centralized in United States, although the first proclamation of Earth Day almost 42 years ago was announced in the country. Earth Day is now coordinated globally in more than 175 countries throughout the world.

History of Earth Day

Since it was first announced in 1970, the intention is more or less the same. Although some programs may focus on the different paths, they are all heading to the same direction that is to save the Earth from any unfriendly treatment such air and water pollution, and energy waste. In fact, in spite of the internationally recognized movement, Earth Day is always trying to emerge the consciousness of people about the importance of preserving the Mother Nature for the better future.

It was Gaylord Nelson, who had the idea for the first time, after he witnessed a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969; he was at that time a U.S. Senator. Actually, he was inspired by anti-war movement; he knew that when the power and force of that public energy was transferred or influenced by environmental issue; the results can be astonishing. With Pete McCloskey and Denis Hayes, the three has managed to promote the event across the nation.

As a result of continuous efforts, on April 22nd approximately 20 million Americans walked together to the streets, parks, and many public areas to demonstrate for a better environment. Colleges and universities joined together demanded to stop the deterioration of the Earth. Many kinds of groups who were previously protesting against oil spill, toxic dumps, pesticides, wildlife extinction, freeways, raw sewage, power plants, and air pollution began to understand that actually the same purpose was shared.

Reaching to the 42nd celebration, the same purpose of preserving the better nature and trying to stop any endangering activities is still in the struggle. Nevertheless, the movement has taken great deals of assistance from organization, boards, individuals, and government to help improve the efficiency of almost all kinds of appliances to produce low emission and to avoid any potentially harmful treatment toward environment. The celebration is as well an invitation to join in the massive campaign. Happy Earth Day.
